How do you break of an engagement in hausa land?

Hello! I'm not sure how it's done a Arewa is why I'm asking. I'm am ebira engaged to a hausa man. we were set to get married then it got postponed and now I have realized I don't want the marriage because there are so many red flags. But the problem is that families have been involved so I have told him and my family which is the normal thing and everyone moves on but someone told me that it is not done that way. so is there something else I or my family are supposed to do?
